Ministry of Health to roll out fist ever cholera vaccine
The Ministry of Health will on Saturday launch the first-ever Oral Cholera vaccination campaign targeting the most affected sub-counties in four counties.
The launch which is expected to be presided over by Health CS Susan Wafula will take place in Madogo, Tana River County in an effort by the ministry to fast-track the outbreak of the disease in the country.
“Following confirmation of a cholera outbreak in the Country, the ministry, working with line ministries, the affected counties and other health stakeholders has initiated various containment measures,” the ministry said in a statement.
“They include provision of cholera supplies to assist in the management of patients, provision of Water and Sanitation (WASH) supplies and household water treatment among others,” the statement adds.
This comes even as the country continues to control a cholera outbreak that has seen at least 72 people die and 4,173 cases reported in 14 counties.
According to health DG Patrick Amoth, five counties have managed to control the outbreak while nine still have active cases.
“The cases are coming down and I am confident that with efforts from partners, we will soon put the situation under control,” he said.
The 14 counties include Nairobi, Kiambu, Nakuru, Uasin Gishu, Kajiado, Murang’a, Machakos, Garissa, Meru, Nyeri, Wajir, Tana River, Kitui and Homa Bay.
Kajiado, Murang’a, Nyeri, and Uasin Gishu have controlled the outbreak.
